Egypt, officially known as the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a transcontinental country encompassing the Sinai Peninsula between the northeast corner of Africa and the southwest corner of Asia. It is bordered to the north by the Mediterranean Sea, to the northeast by the Gaza Strip of Palestine and Israel, to the east by the Red Sea, to the south by Sudan, and to the west by Libya. In the northeast, the Gulf of Aqaba separates Egypt from Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Alexandria, the second-largest city in Egypt, is a significant industrial and tourist centre on the Mediterranean coast. Egypt, with approximately 100 million inhabitants, is the fourteenth most populous nation in the globe and the third most populous nation in Africa, after Nigeria and Ethiopia.
